To be fair, my parents were good role models as volunteers. I was also a bookworm so didn't play with toys so much. Another treasure was the history book I received when I was 6. No wonder I ended up studying history. The image of you in Beijing blaring out Chinese opera is priceless!

If you're trying to avoid sugar, but still need that cookie/biscuit hit, this is a good one: Applesauce oatmeal cookies: 350g (12.34 oz) unsweetened applesauce 2 cups (160g) quick oats 1/4 cup (30g) dried cranberries 2 tablespoons desiccated coconut 1 tsp cinnamon Applesauce oatmeal cookies: 1. Preheat oven to 170C. 2. In a large bowl whisk together oats, desiccated coconut, cinnamon and dried cranberries. 3. Add applesauce and stir until incorporated. 4. Roll into balls, place on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper. 5. Bake for 18-20 until lightly browned.

I was quite an old child by then (!), but the Sony Walkman in its day was just amazing. As one of my housemates at uni said, it felt like your brains were being sucked out having that sound so close... I remember a Tiny Tears doll as being very covetable. But when I was in primary school, Idi Amin kicked the Ugandan Asians out of the country. My mum volunteered at a disused airforce base that put them up and came home and told us that the children had no toys. I tentatively approached the head teacher the next day and said how awful this was. End result - we all brought in toys to give to the children. I gave most of mine away I remember.
